Description
This painting was inspired by a newspaper photo I saw shortly after the Japanese earthquake and resulting tsunami. The story behind this is about an 18th century family that planted a pine forest for protection of the rice fields from ocean spray. At the time of disaster, all but one of 70,000 pine trees was washed away by the tsunami. This pine tree represents much of Japanese history and culture. Many efforts were taken in an attempt to save this lone pine.
