Description
This is a torii gate that I visited in Nara, Japan. It is painted on rice paper with Japanese watercolors and sumi. Some torii gateways are more elaborate than others, but the basics remain: two pillars adjoined by one or two beams. These gateways aren't just for decoration. In the Shinto religion, they symbolize the transition from the mundane to the sacred. They mark the entrance into a shrine.
